Drug addiction and drug abusing seems to be similar, but there is a lot of difference between them. The only common thing between them is that both of them have harmful side effects in both social and physical way.
Drug addiction involves the progression of acute drug use to the development of drug-seeking behavior, the vulnerability to relapse, and the decreased, slowed ability to respond to naturally rewarding stimuli. Drugs known to cause addiction include illegal drugs as well as prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Addictive drugs also include a large number of substrates that are currently considered to have no medical value and are not available over the counter or by prescription.
Now coming to Drug abuse, you could have heard about athlete drug testing and the ban on the athletes who turn up to be positive. Well this comes under drug abuse. Drug abuse is consuming drugs such as psychoactive drug or performance enhancing drug for a non-therapeutic or non-medical effect. It is estimated that 4.7% of global population aged 15-64 annually consume illicit drugs such as alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methaqualone, and opium alkaloids.
