Tooth Sensitivity and Its Treatment

Among the many common dental problems, tooth sensitivity is one which can make a person miserable. Tooth sensitivity is a short sharp pain felt when the tooth or dentin is touched by anything. It mostly occurs in response to hot, cold, sweet, sour and touch. The pain associated with sensitive teeth cannot allow a person to concentrate on any work.

Several causes like tooth-decay, wrong brushing habits, aerate drinks, gum infections and many others are seen with tooth sensitivity. With increase in age, the enamel on the teeth wears off exposing the dentin and increasing the risk of sensitivity. Brushing too hard may also cause enamel loss, dentin exposure and tooth sensitivity.

Many people neglect visiting a dentist to get rid of the problem. They even find some home remedies for alleviating the pain. However, it is preferable to consult a dentist and know the right reason for the pain and sensitivity. Instead of finding the temporary solutions, it is good to have a permanent dental treatment for sensitive teeth.

Over-the-counter desensitizing toothpaste containing Fluoride and either Potassium Nitrate or Strontium Chloride is recommended by the dentist, if the teeth are found to be exposed. The sensation transmitted from the tooth to the nerve is blocked by these agents thereby reducing the pain. The dentist also checks for any decay in the teeth. The decay is cleaned and filled to seal the underlying dentin. If the problem is because of gum diseases, then specific treatment is given to reduce the disease. If there is no other problem except the improper brushing habits, the dentist suggests a change in the brushing method for proper dental care. Hence, it is better to go to a dentist to get the right solution for treating tooth sensitivity.
