What are the Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is the common dental problem faced by most of the people. It is the pain associated with teeth and the associated areas triggered by hot or cold food items and drinks. There may be many causes for teeth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is seen due to the exposure of dentin which is covered by the enamel. When the enamel is lost because of any reason, then the dentin gets exposed. The nerve endings which are present within the pulp and close to dentin get affected to the pressure and temperature changes. This, therefore, creates pain when touched by hot or cold items.

Brushing with excessive pressure may recede your gums that cover the root of the teeth. The gums may also recede because of some periodontal diseases and gingivitis. Obviously, the wearing down of gums makes your tooth sensitive as the root gets exposed. The other common cause of tooth sensitivity is tooth decay and fractured teeth. Poor oral hygiene causes tooth decay. Fractured and decayed teeth become the favorable source for bacterial growth. So, infection starts at these areas and spreads into the pulp causing pain.

Certain over-the-counter mouth washes containing acidic components remove the enamel over time making your teeth sensitive. Even, some teeth whitening products containing certain concentration of soda and peroxide are responsible for tooth sensitivity. Apart from these, even some age related reasons like deteriorating strength of dental structures and gum recession also sensitize the teeth. However, proper measures have to be taken to reduce the associated pain. It is better to follow good oral health practices to avoid tooth sensitivity.
