Why do athletes use drugs?

An athlete will misuse a drug for number of reasons. These factors can be associated with the drug itself, the person or their environment.

Factors related to drug are effects of the drug, flexibility of availability, legal status, and physical dependence.

Factors related to person are uneasiness with performance and progress, psychological dependence, desire to handle anxiety or stress, desire to relax, suspicion that others are using drugs, fascination to think they can escape from it, problem of getting simply influenced by others, lack of knowledge regarding side effects, and lack of confidence.

Factors related to Environment are friends or other athletes taking drugs, pressure to win from coach, parents, public, media, prestige and fame, advertising, impact of role models, culture of the sport, financial reward, impractical qualifying standards or performance expectations and national pride.
